Extreme Ownership — Fostering an unwavering design culture.

Have you ever been part of a team where the culture was less than ideal and morale was low?

It’s a common experience that a lot of Designers can relate to. In this article, we will explore the importance of cultivating a positive culture within a Design Team and provide practical tips on how to improve team dynamics, morale, and the overall culture.

By fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and trust, your design team can thrive and deliver outstanding results for each other, the organization, and your customers.

Defining culture

Defining the Culture of a Design Team: Culture within a Design team encompasses the shared values, beliefs, behaviors, and norms that guide the team’s interactions and work environment.

At the end of the day, culture influences how team members collaborate, communicate, and approach problem-solving, together.

By consciously defining the culture, you set the foundation for a productive and positive team dynamic.

Empowering Team Members for Success

Empowering team members involves recognizing their strengths and providing them with the necessary resources and autonomy to excel.

By fostering an environment that encourages creativity, innovation, and professional growth, you can unleash the full potential of every member of the Design Team. You may be thinking…how?

Below are a few examples of how to do this:

  1. Effective communication.
  2. Regular feedback (1:1’s to collect intel on how the team is doing — Design team retros have worked well for me in the past).
  3. Mentoring opportunities (Putting Sr. and Jr. Designers together)
  4. Learning opportunities TOGETHER! (Go to a conference as a team!)

Leveraging Team Members’ Skill Sets: Understanding the limitations and strengths of team members is crucial for optimizing their contributions. By identifying and leveraging their most valuable skill sets, you can assign tasks that align with their expertise and interests. This not only enhances individual performance but also fosters a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction within the team.

Fostering Collaboration and Trust: Collaboration and trust are foundational pillars of a high-performing Design Team.

Creating an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, providing constructive feedback, and collaborating on projects is essential. Regular team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and cross-functional collaborations can foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement.

This is a big one…

Embracing a Culture of Innovation: To maintain team morale and engagement, it’s important to encourage experimentation and risk-taking. Remember, we are designers, we always want to innovate. There should be a time and space to foster and drive continuous innovation.

Trying new approaches, tools, and methodologies can breathe new life into the team’s work and keep them motivated.

By fostering a culture that embraces innovation, you create opportunities for growth, learning, and breakthrough solutions.

Next Steps for Fostering a Positive Culture

Creating and sustaining a positive culture is an ongoing process. It requires consistent effort from everyone on the team, especially leadership.

Consider implementing practices such as:

  1. Regular team-building activities
  2. Open communication channels
  3. Recognition programs, and continuous learning opportunities.

By nurturing a culture of transparency, empathy, and accountability, you can strengthen your design team and create an environment where everyone thrives.

Recently I read a book called “Extreme Ownership” and I highly recommend everyone should pick it up and give it a read. I feel like there are a lot of parallels that we can draw from that book to creating and driving an amazing culture on any (Design) Team.

Drawing inspiration from this book (a book by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin) they emphasize the importance of taking ownership of the team’s culture.

The book highlights the significance of leaders setting the tone and taking responsibility for the team’s performance and morale — really paving the way for everyone on that team.

By embracing the principles of Extreme Ownership, such as taking ownership of mistakes, empowering individuals, and leading by example, you can cultivate a culture of excellence within your Design Team.

At the end of the day — The culture of a Design Team plays a vital role in its success and value to the company, and the users of the products they build together.

By proactively working on improving team dynamics, empowering individuals, fostering collaboration and trust, and embracing innovation, you can create a positive and high-performing culture on your team.

Remember, fostering a positive culture is an ongoing process that requires consistent effort and dedication. By implementing the tips shared in this article, you can lay the groundwork for a thriving Design Team that delivers exceptional results and breeds a new generation of leaders in this space.

Last but not least, you DO NOT have to have a leadership title to be a leader. Take the next step to be a leader on your team, the next generation needs you!
